URBANMAKING

Urban Elements for Inclusion

From the 3rd to the 10th of September, we participated in the 18th Vertical Workshop of the ESARQ- * UIC, which was held under the title #Urbanmaking: Public Space Elements for Inclusion. We participate co-directing, along with our colleagues, Makea tu Vida one of the five work groups.

Make a city from the element

By designing and constructing proposals for furniture or urban elements that are catalysts and propellants of new surroundings capable of moving activities to the street that are not traditionally present - elements that are set in the least represented sectors and that promote a greater inclusion of society. Elements that are flexible, inspiring and adaptable. They promote dialogue, games, culture and art, in short, they support a city capable of creating new situations of interaction and socialization among the people who live in it. The actions that were planted would be visible within the Park event (*ing)* Day BCN'15.

As a starting point for the workshop, we began to work on the 'encounter' between citizens in the public space. From the Greek 'agora' concept to the interaction with social networks, the different uses and interactions and the extension of the concept of 'public space' between the physical and digital dimensions were analyzed. Developing in the definition of the concept to be developed and prototype, the idea of 'pit box' or 'point of supply' was chosen as a support for the popular culture that happens in the street, both for artists and for the public in general.

In order to define the formalization and the plan of uses of the object / device, the context was analyzed to see where it was going to be tested publicly. It was in the exact coordinate of Av. Parallel 75 (opposite the mythical location of El Molino varieties).

That's why the idea of 'culture on the street' was analyzed, the flow of pedestrian crossings, noise levels, space not occupied by terraces in the public space, cultural agents that interacted in this area at the same time, contacts with neighborhood organizations, neighbors and merchants were established. On the other hand, RaonsPubliques' colleagues advised us about the situation of the Parallel Plan and its consequences on the planned change of life in the Parallel avenue and more exactly at the crossroads between the neighborhoods of Sant Antoni, El Raval and PobleSec ... with all this, we come closer to an analysis of the context of the situation that allowed us to get to work.

For the formalization phase of the proposal, we worked on the definition of a type of urban furniture that could integrate and make possible the culture of the street, the permanence of people and basic comfort in the public space - a temporary, mobile and mutable equipment according to the needs of the users, which was easily replicable and transportable.

The workshop lasted seven days. The high intensity and total delivery by the members of the working group managed to formalize the PIT BOX proposal in a record time. Two prototypes were carried out on a scale of 1: 1 which were later moved to Parallel 75 for testing inside the Park day (*ing)* Day.

After the test during the day of the Park (*ing)* Day the two prototypes were moved to the Ateneu Santboiá, to the facilities of the Plaça de la Terraseta, in the outer zone of the Ateneu itself.
