HABITATGE JOVE CALDES
Participatory project for public youth housing
What solutions exist to prevent young people from leaving their territory in search of affordable housing? Can we build quickly and sustainably without increasing the price per square meter? Do we conceive citizen participation in the design of public housing? How does the confinement experience affect home design? The #HabitatgeJoveCaldes project tries to answer these and other questions.
The project is developed by Straddle3 and Eulia Arkitektura applying the ATRI methodology, in collaboration with Societat Orgànica. It is located in front of the public park of the Lluis Companys square. As a result of the analysis of the context conditions, a 3-story building with 8 units and a community space connected to the garden is proposed. The proposal has been configured through a participatory process and will continue through the co-production process, including assisted self-construction workshops.
All units are designed to be built with reused shipping containers and cross laminated wood (CLT). The containers will be conditioned in the workshop with the required insulation, installations and coatings. The use of these prefabricated modules will allow the construction to be completed in a few months. This gives the possibility of reducing costs and responding quickly to the need for housing. In addition, the project encourages everyone to rethink the use of material resources and to choose the most environmentally friendly options in response to the climate emergency we are experiencing.
Participatory process
We believe that participation is essential to be able to consider all possibilities and realities and allow people to make decisions about their own habitat. The design process has been carried out with the participation of representatives of the youth of Caldes de Montbui, neighbors and technical staff from the town hall. The preparatory phase of the participatory process was developed through, in full confinement, in which we discussed the scope and organization of the process.
In the project phase, for the participatory co-design process, an online meeting and two face-to-face meetings were held with the participation of neighbors with a diverse profile. The first meeting was informative and consultative, to publicize the project, answer any questions that might arise and collect the observations of the participants. The second meeting consisted of a workshop, in which the participants discussed aspects related to the spatial configuration, the finishes of the homes and common areas, and the use of community spaces. The third session was also held as a workshop on the relationship between the design of the façade and energy efficiency and the management of the equipment. The participants worked on the material and the openings of the façade and received direct advice from Gerardo Wadel from Societat Organica. In the third session, the housing management system was also worked on, in which the municipal housing technician, Jordi Pruna, presented different alternatives and representatives of the Caldes Youth Assembly proposed an interesting system of access to housing based on age, income and other parameters.
Digital platform for citizen participation
We designed a digital platform to facilitate an accessible and transparent process for everyone. Through this digital platform everyone can follow the meetings, access the progress and decisions made in the meetings and be part of the development of the project.
