The European Commissioner for Housing and Energy visits Wikihousing

On April 20th, as part of his official visit to Barcelona within the European affordable housing tour promoted by the European Commission, the European Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Dan Jørgensen, visited the Wikihousing project. His stay in the city included meetings with different institutions, public administrations and stakeholders linked to housing policies, with the aim of learning about initiatives capable of responding to contemporary housing challenges through new social, environmental and constructive approaches.

During the visit to Wikihousing, we had the opportunity to present the project, share the research and development lines currently being promoted, and show the current state of the construction works and the collaborative building processes linked to the project. The meeting made it possible to explain how Wikihousing is working on new models for public housing production based on reducing construction costs and times, the use of ecological and reversible systems, and the incorporation of participatory and training processes connected to the building site itself.

The visit also opened up conversations about possible future collaborations and about the role that experimental initiatives such as Wikihousing can play within new European affordable housing strategies, especially in relation to the need to promote more sustainable, distributed and accessible models for contemporary cities.
