Beagle 2 lander will hitch a ride aboard the European Space Agency Mars Express Mission to Mars in June 2003. Beagle 2 is named in honor of the research ship that carried naturalist Charles Darwin around the world in the 1830's. Like its predecessor, seeks to look for life, now past or present life on the surface of Mars. Damien Hirst spot painting on the Mars lander will serve as the calibration target for the on-board cameras and spectrometers. The project requires paints that will tolerate temperatures of 2000 degrees and that won't change color under ultraviolet light. "At art school we were encouraged to break boundaries... But mars? Not in my wildest dreams" | |
